10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a House Cleaner

You are about to give a stranger access to your home, often while you are not there. These are the questions worth asking before you do, and what a good answer sounds like. Ask the same ten of every company you are considering and the differences become obvious very quickly.

1. Are you insured?

This is the one that matters most and the one most people skip. If a cleaner is injured in your home, or something is damaged, an uninsured company leaves that exposure with you. A good answer is a straight yes, without hedging.

2. Are you a registered business?

A registered, licensed business has a legal identity, a paper trail and something to lose. An arrangement made informally has none of those things, which matters on the day something goes wrong.

3. Who exactly will be in my home?

Ask whether the company uses its own team or subcontracts to whoever is available. Ask how team members are selected. You are entitled to know who has your address and, often, your key.

4. Will it be the same people each visit?

Consistency is what makes a recurring service good. A team that knows your home learns which things matter to you. No company can promise the identical people every single week, but the honest answer is that they try, and they will say so plainly rather than overpromising.

5. What happens if I am not happy?

Listen for a specific commitment with a time frame attached, not a vague reassurance. “We stand behind our work” means nothing on its own. Ours is 24 hours: if something does not feel quite right after your service, let us know and we gladly return to make it right.

6. Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?

If you are expected to provide them, that is a real cost that belongs in your comparison. It also means the results depend on whatever happens to be under your sink.

7. What products do you use, and are they safe for pets?

Worth asking if you have animals, small children, or anyone in the house with sensitivities. A company that has thought about this will have a clear answer ready, because they get asked often.

8. Is the price fixed, or hourly?

With hourly pricing, a slower job costs you more. With a quoted price, you know the number before anyone starts and it does not move because a room took longer than expected. Ask which it is, and ask what would cause the price to change.

9. What is not included?

More useful than asking what is included. Interior windows, inside the oven, inside the fridge and laundry are the usual boundaries. Knowing them in advance prevents the disappointment of assuming something was covered.

10. How do I reach an actual person?

Schedules change, keys go missing, plans move. You want to know there is someone who answers, not only a booking form. Ask who you speak to when something needs sorting out.

One more thing worth doing

Read the reviews, but read the recent ones and read how the company responds to criticism. Any company with enough clients will eventually have a bad day. What tells you about them is what happened next.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No, and most of our clients are not. We agree access arrangements with you in advance and treat the home the same either way.

Should I tidy before the cleaners arrive?

Clearing surfaces helps, because it means more of the visit goes into cleaning rather than moving things. Beyond that, no preparation is needed.

What if I need to reschedule?

Let us know as early as you can and we will move the visit. Our cancellation policy sets out the details.
